Terms of Use
Last updated 28 September 2026
These terms cover the Basalt apps, Basalt Host, Basalt for Windows and Basalt for Android, published by Refora Technologies, and this website. They are short because Basalt is free software that runs entirely on your own devices.
1. Agreement
By installing or using Basalt you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not install or use it. The licence in section 2 is what grants your rights to the software; nothing in these terms takes away any right it gives you.
2. Licence
Basalt is free software under the GNU General Public License v3.0. Subject to that licence, you may use it for any purpose, study and change its source code, and share it, changed or not. Versions you distribute must also be under the GPLv3 and come with their source. The full text is in the repository.
There is no charge, no subscription and no account. If anyone charged you for a copy of Basalt, you were overcharged; the official downloads are on this website and on GitHub.
3. Your files and your content
Basalt moves and plays files you already have, between devices you own or control. Refora Technologies does not host, see, store, index or control any of your files, and has no way to.
- You are responsible for the files you share with Basalt and for having the right to store, copy, share and watch them. Please do not use Basalt to infringe anyone’s copyright or other rights.
- Basalt does what you ask it to with your files, including deleting, moving, renaming and overwriting them, on the host’s drive and on your devices. Keep backups of anything you cannot afford to lose.
- Film and series recognition, posters and picture-quality tags are made automatically and can be wrong. They never change your files.
4. Your devices and network
Pairing a device gives it access to the drive the host shares: to read, and unless you make it read-only, to change. Decide who you pair with, and use the host’s controls to make devices read-only or remove them. Keeping your PC, your devices and your home network secure is your responsibility, as is checking your organisation’s rules before installing Basalt on a device that is not yours to administer.
5. Requirements
Basalt Host and Basalt for Windows run on 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. Basalt for Android runs on 64-bit Android 8.0 or later. Devices and the host need to be on the same local network. Performance depends on your hardware, drive and network.
6. Third-party services
Basalt can use services run by others: GitHub, to check for and download updates, and, only if you switch on posters, third-party poster services including The Movie Database (TMDb). Your use of them is subject to their own terms and policies. Refora Technologies is not responsible for them and cannot guarantee they stay available.
This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
7. Updates
The apps check for new versions and tell you what changed. Installing an update is your choice, and each one is checked against its published SHA-256 checksum first. Updates may add, change or remove features. We aim to keep the apps working with each other across versions, but cannot promise every version will work with every other.
8. No warranty
Basalt is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. This is the position the GPLv3 sets out, repeated here in plain sight rather than buried. We do not promise that Basalt will be free of errors, will never lose data, or will play every file.
9. Limitation of liability
So far as the law allows, Refora Technologies is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, for loss of data, or for lost profit or revenue, arising from your use of Basalt or this website. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or any rights you have as a consumer that cannot be waived.
10. Open-source components
Basalt is built on the work of many open-source projects, each under its own licence, which also applies to your use
of it. The main ones are below; the complete notices ship with the apps as THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt.

11. Trademarks
Basalt and the Basalt mark are names of Refora Technologies. Windows is a trademark of Microsoft Corporation, and Android is a trademark of Google LLC; they are named here only to say what Basalt runs on, and Basalt is not affiliated with or endorsed by either. Every film, series, poster and photo shown on this website and in its films is made up for illustration.
12. This website
This website describes Basalt and links to its downloads. It is provided as is, and we may change it at any time. Links to other sites, such as GitHub, are provided for convenience, and those sites are responsible for their own content.
13. Changes to these terms
If these terms change, the new version appears on this page with a new date at the top. Continuing to use Basalt after a change means accepting the revised terms. The licence of any version you already have does not change.
14. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which Refora Technologies operates, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
