Basalt on Windows
Install Basalt on a Windows computer and open your drive.
Basalt is the app that opens your drive. Install it on every Windows computer that should reach the drive, including the host computer itself if you want to use the drive there too.
Before you start
- Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit
- Basalt Host running on a computer on the same network. See Getting started if it isn’t yet
Install it
-
Download Basalt for Windows from the download page.
-
Open the installer and follow its steps. It installs for your Windows user only, and does not need administrator rights.
If Windows SmartScreen stops the installer, choose More info, then Run anyway. You can check the file first: see Checking a download.
-
Basalt opens when it finishes.
Pair with your host
The first time it opens, Basalt shows how it works and looks for hosts on your network.
- Choose your host from the list.
- Basalt Host shows six digits. Type them in Basalt.
That’s it: Basalt opens the drive, and connects by itself from now on. More, including what to do when the host isn’t listed, is in Pairing a device.
Find your way around
| Where | What is there |
|---|---|
| Files | Every folder and file on the drive |
| Recent and Starred | What you opened lately, and what you starred |
| Library | Movies, TV Series, Videos, Music and Photos, as the host shares them |
| Manage host | Shown when this device manages the host. See Manage host |
| Settings | This device, the drive, playback and security |
Press Ctrl K anywhere to search the drive or jump to a section.
Updates
Basalt looks for new versions by itself. When one is out, it shows what is new, and installs it when you choose to. Your pairing and settings are kept. See Updates.
Uninstall
Open Settings, choose Apps, then Installed apps, find Basalt and choose Uninstall. Nothing on the drive is touched. To pair this computer again later, you type a new PIN.
