Profiles
Give everyone in the house their own Continue watching and starred files, on every device, and bring a profile from another drive.
A profile is a name, a colour and a PIN. Its Continue watching and Starred files follow it to every device. Profiles are optional: without one, each device simply keeps its own history.
Add a profile
When Basalt asks Who is using the drive, choose Add profile. Give it a name and a colour, and choose a PIN of 4 to 8 digits.
Profiles can also be added in Basalt Host, or in Manage host. Then the person chooses their own PIN the first time they sign in.
Who can add profiles is up to the host: Anyone, from any paired device, or Managers only. It’s under Who can add profiles, in the host’s profile settings or in Manage host.
Choose your profile and type its PIN. Keep me signed in on this device means typing it once per device; leave it off on a device others use.
To change who is using a device, choose your name in the sidebar (under More on Android), then Switch profile or Sign out.
PINs are stored on the host only as salted hashes, never as typed. After several wrong guesses, a profile is locked for a while, longer each time, up to fifteen minutes.
Continue as this device
Not everyone needs a profile. Continue as this device uses the drive with the device’s own history and stars. Always continue as this device, without asking stops the question on that device.
A host can insist on profiles instead: with Require a profile on, everyone signs in to a profile to use the drive.
Forgotten PIN
Someone who manages the host can reset it: in Basalt Host or Manage host, open the profile’s options and choose Reset PIN. The person chooses a new PIN the next time they sign in.
Remove a profile
Remove profile, in the same place, removes it along with its history and stars on this drive. Devices signed in to it are signed out.
Bring your profile from another drive
If you have more than one host, such as one at home and one at a friend’s or in the office, a profile from one drive can be used on another:
- Pair your device with the other host as usual.
- When Basalt asks who is using the drive, your profile from your own drive is offered, marked with that drive’s name. Choose it.
- Someone who manages the other host lets it in, once, from Basalt Host or Manage host. Basalt carries on by itself when they do.
From then on, it signs in there with no PIN of its own: your PIN stays on your own drive, and never reaches the other host. Your history and stars on the other drive are kept there, separately.
The other host can decline the request, or remove the profile later, like any other.
